Benchmarks from Tally market data, updated for 2026. Ranges assume ~2–3.5% engagement; higher engagement supports the top of each range.

Reels are the anchor deliverable on Instagram — they're what brands brief for, because Reels are the only Instagram format pushed to non-followers. Everything else is priced relative to the Reel: Story sets typically land around 40–50% of your Reel rate, and carousels sit just under a Reel.

You may have seen the old rule of thumb of "$100 per 10K followers." Against the actual market it badly underprices: at 25K followers that formula says $250, while the micro-tier benchmark for a Reel is $500–$2,000. Per-follower formulas ignore tier jumps, engagement, and usage rights — the three things that actually set your price.

What brands actually ask for (and how to price the ask)

Most Instagram briefs aren't a single post — they're a package: "1 Reel + 2 Stories," "Reel + carousel + usage rights." Price the components separately and sum them; never quote a vague bundle number that quietly absorbs extras. At mid-tier, a full IG + TikTok + Story bundle benchmarks at $5,000 – $9,000 — meaningfully more than any single deliverable.

Whitelisting — the brand running your content as a paid ad from your handle — is always a separate fee per 30 days, at the ranges in the table above. So is exclusivity ("no competing brands for 60 days"), which locks you out of income and should be billed accordingly. If a brief mentions either without a number attached, that's your cue to counter.

Frequently asked questions

Is the $100 per 10K followers rule accurate?
No — it's years out of date and underprices at almost every tier. A 25K-follower creator using it would quote $250 for a Reel against a market range of $500–$2,000. Rates move in tier jumps, not smooth per-follower lines, and engagement and usage rights matter more than raw count.
How much more is a Reel worth than a Story?
Roughly 2–2.5x. Reels are permanent, algorithmically distributed to non-followers, and reusable by the brand; Stories are 24-hour placements to your existing audience. At micro tier: $500–$2,000 for a Reel vs $200–$800 for a Story set.
What should I charge for a carousel?
Slightly under your Reel rate — at mid-tier, benchmarks put carousels at $2,000–$4,000 against $2,000–$5,000 for Reels. Carousels don't get Reel-level reach, but strong save/share rates keep them valuable to brands.
Should I accept gifted product for a sponsored post?
Only if you're nano, you'd buy the product anyway, and the brand attaches no usage rights or exclusivity. The moment there's a required deliverable list, it's a paid engagement — quote the table.
What raises my rate within my tier?
Engagement above ~3.5% (benchmarks support a 10–25% premium), a niche brands pay up for (finance, tech, parenting), a track record with similar brands, and any usage rights in the brief. Being near the top of your tier's follower range also justifies quoting the upper end.
